Variety in sentences
Use of the ‘Super Sentence’ and ‘Punctuation’ booklets have helped pupils address a lack of variety in their sentences. ‘Up-scaling’ exemplar sentences on the board as a class or in groups has been a useful technique to make pupils aware of how they can improve their writing skills.

Pupil led learning
Pupil led learning has engaged classes. Successful practice has included asking pupils to make short presentations to the group and encouraging pupils to work in smaller groups with clear roles that help them support each other. Kagan methods are being used to maximise engagement and reduce ‘passive learning’.

Practice exam questions
Regular practice exam questions. Using silent writing time in the lesson and insisting on silence in order to prepare students for exam conditions. Ensuring pupils complete exam questions within a certain amount of time by using a visible timer on the board to help with this.
